From Marine Engineering to Fibre Networks

With a background as a marine technician, he now works as a fiber technician at Transtema. The work is varied and characterized by a high degree of personal responsibility and problem-solving. In the interview, he talks about how he ended up at Transtema, his day-to-day work in the field, and what it takes to succeed in the role.

Tell us a bit about your background – how did you end up at Transtema?

I’m a trained marine engineer, but I quickly realised that being away for long periods didn’t work well with family life. I started studying computer science at university but missed having a more active job. During my studies, I worked part-time as a fibre technician. Choosing to switch to fibre technician is a decision I’ve never regretted. I’ve now worked with fibre for x years and really enjoy it. Since I’ve tried many different things, I’m not afraid to take on new challenges and learn – I know it’s possible to change direction in your career. With the right attitude, you can go far!

What’s the best thing about your job as a fibre technician?

What I like most is the variety and the freedom with responsibility. I get to plan my own days, which gives a sense of involvement and flexibility. No day is the same – one moment I’m repairing a cut fibre cable in the mud, the next I’m helping a private customer or a business. You always need to keep a spare set of clothes in the car so you can look clean and presentable for the next job.

How would you describe your team?

The team here in Skövde is fantastic! We help and support each other, and it’s a great group where we share responsibility to get the job done. That’s a big reason why I enjoy my work so much.

What does your work mean to you?

It feels great to work with something that’s so important for society to function. When my kids ask what I do, I usually say I fix the internet – it’s simple and everyone understands what that means. Most people can relate to how frustrating it is when the network doesn’t work.

What three qualities are most important for someone who wants to become a fibre technician today?

Driven, take initiative, make decisions at work, and be open-minded. You need to be quite self-driven. Careful and precise!

Which of our core values do you like best?

I think our values complement each other and can be applied to all parts of our work. Whether we’re testing new ideas in the field or suggesting improvements, these values are obvious to us as a team where we support each other through respect and responsibility.

You were chosen as one of Transtema’s Heroes – tell us about that!

Yes, last year I was selected as one of Transtema’s Heroes and got to go on a Hero trip with other colleagues in the group who also received the award. It was a fun weekend where I got to meet more people in different roles and companies within the group. I’m very happy and proud of the award, and the fact that my colleagues took the time to nominate me means a lot.
